Why do joints change with age?

It is important to know how joints change as we get old. In women, the process starts to show signs after reaching 50 years of age. In men, the changes are seen while they are 40 years of age. The bone marrow or connective tissue and tendons thin down when we get older. We also start losing muscle mass when we get old. Many people think that muscles absorb the impact of daily lives, while the joint do it, which causes the joint to damage and also to spoil.

It is necessary for all of us to take prevention while still, we are young, else we will have to suffer because of joint diseases later in life. You can do some things for preventing damage to happen to your joints.

The first and most important thing, which we tend to overlook is to sit or stand in a correct posture. The reason is that bad posture puts a bad impact on joints. If sitting in a straight position is difficult for you, then try to sit straight for a few minutes and then relax.


Physically moving keeps your joints moving and in good condition. Living a sedentary lifestyle can lead to joints becoming stiff, making simple day to day work also very painful. The exercise which has a low impact on the body and most importantly on joints can be done, like walking, swimming.

Having the right weight

Being overweight puts a strain on your joints. Joints can carry only limited weight, if the extra weight is put on them then it causes swelling of joints.

Have a nutritious diet

Weight loss can only happen if you eat a nutritious diet. There are many foods which have anti-inflammation properties. Green leafy vegetables, fruits, Milk and milk products are some of the foods which you can include in your day to day life for losing weight and also for healthy joints.

Drink plenty of water

Having soft drinks and alcohol leave you feeling dehydrated for long periods of time. Instead, you should drink plenty of water every day. If you do not like drinking plain water, then having flavored water ( like Lemon water or some other flavor of water) can be had.

If you keep doing these things then very soon your joints will be very healthy.
