What is Vedic knowledge?
Our country has some of the great cultural wealth of knowledge found in Vedic literature & its importance in the modern world. The Vedas are a huge body of knowledge, texts originating from our very own culture, Indian subcontinent. The language in which they have been composed is also from our culture, Sanskrit. The texts combine the oldest layers of Sanskrit literature & oldest scriptures of Hinduism. The Vedas, by Hindus are considered to be apauruseya ,not originating from man, superhuman or impersonal , authorless.
For orthodox Indian philosophers, Vedas are considered revelations seen by ancient sages after deep meditation and texts that have been carefully safeguarded since a long long time. The Mahabharata, another of our Hindu Epic, Brahma is credited for creation of Vedas. The vedic hymns or chants themselves declare that they are skillfully created by sages.
There are four Vedas – Rig Veda, yajur Veda, Sama veda, Athar veda. Each has been arranged into four major text types- Samhitas, Aranyakas, Brahmanas, and Upanishads.
Indian Philosophies and denominations have different positions on Vedas. Indian philosophy schools mention Vedas as their scriptural authority.
